How to measure a room for new flooring

A quick way to get a rough area before you ask for a price, and why we still measure on site.

Published 20 September 2026

Measure the length and width of each room at the widest points and multiply them to get square metres. For L-shaped rooms, split them into rectangles and add the areas together.

Add for waste

Add about 10% for cutting and waste on straight layouts, and 15% for herringbone or chevron.

Why we still visit

Walls in many buildings are not square, doorways need profiles, and the subfloor may need levelling. Our free site visit catches these before they become extra costs on installation day.

See the floor in your own room before you decide.

Our team visits with samples, measures every room and sends a written quotation within 24 hours.
